Corporate Documentary, Vietnam
Director, Videographer, Editor: Angus Ashton
Vietnam has the highest rate of child drownings in South East Asia, and one of the highest rates in the world. Angus Ashton was asked by NGO Norwegian Church Aid to produce this short documentary film that documents a 2013 learn to swim campaign that was implemented in central Thua Thien Hue Province.
With an increase in severe weather events and, as of 2014, the lack of a national learn to swim curriculum in schools; young children are those most at risk in Vietnam’s changing climate. Norwegian Church Aid is one group in Vietnam that is working to build essential life skills and capacity for rural students and school teachers. Implemented in 2012, the NGO’s ongoing project “Swim Towards Disaster Risk Reduction” has been effective in equipping students and teachers alike with water safety, swimming and first aid skills.
